Jacob Millsaps' mother 'bought' him the position of Provisional Pastor of Lilac Chapel on the Hyacinth College campus.

When I say 'bought': it was Cora Mae Millsaps' money that built Lilac Chapel.
When I say Provisional Pastor: Cora Mae built the chapel and made major renovations to all the campus dormitories with the provision that Jake be made past. Based upon Jake's conviction and completed prison time for the crime of involuntary manslaughter, the college agreed to make Jacob the pastor and campus minister for the period of one year.

There are some trials ahead for Jake. One of his Religion 101 students is a relative of the person Jake killed (as a drunk driver) and has given Jake a new moniker: 'Killer Millsaps'. His wife, Linda, is a professional musician who isn't at all happy being a preacher's wife and singing 'karaoke' praise & worship anthems in the choir. And his best friend enjoys lighting up the occasional toke when they get together to jam in Millsaps' garage/studio.

Add in an old man who's constructing a lean-to in the woods; a place made especially for his sick granddaughter to sing.

And just to make things a little bit harder there are demons about, whose expressed instruction from 'The Boss' is to negatively influence the religious conviction of the Hyacinth College student body.
Jake will be lucky to make it through the first semester especially since, even though he is an accredited divinity school graduate, he's not the least bit religious! Well, at least not yet…
The Lord works in mysterious ways and sometimes through some very strange people.
